Chad Stahelski, the director of John Wick, spoke about Donnie Yen's fighting technique in the film.
During an interview with RogerEbert.com, the filmmaker said that the Ip Man star's fistic movements are inspired by boxer Sugar Ray Leonard.
"He's a huge Sugar Ray Leonard fan; it's in 'Flashpoint,' and it's in a lot of his films." I had lunch with Donnie yesterday, which was amusing. We spoke about it a lot. Many of his native audiences in China don't know who Sugar Ray Leonard was, therefore they don't appreciate that amazing allusion."
According to Stahelski, Yen also included Leonard's autograph on Ip Man punch in the film.
"[Yen] said, 'Hey man, I'm going to do an Ip Man, a straight blast and speed punch,' and Donnie burst out laughing." 'I'm not sure why, I simply feel like I have to do this.' So I say, 'All right, do it, let's shoot it, and see if we like it.' And then he shoots it, and everyone behind the camera bursts out laughing. He's so****** quick."
