On Saturday night (July 29), the Foo Fighters and Alanis Morissette performed a dramatic live performance of Sinéad O'Connor's song, "Mandinka," at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan.
The touching homage paid respect to the late Irish artist, who died recently at the age of 56.
Alanis Morissette dedicated the song to O'Connor ahead of their performance, hailing her as a beautiful woman with outstanding intelligence and tremendous empathy who was much ahead of her time. The collaboration between the two major talents was a poignant tribute to the renowned singer-songwriter and her lasting legacy.
Sinéad O'Connor, best known for her activism and her 1990 song of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U," died, leaving a legacy of strong music and emotional protest.
Numerous musicians, including Brandi Carlile, P!nk, Tori Amos, and Fall Out Boy, have paid respect to her by performing her songs live in the aftermath of her passing.
While many grieved O'Connor's death and praised her legacy, others criticised the media's handling of the late singer. Morrissey, in particular, was vehement, accusing the industry of ignoring O'Connor throughout her life and only honouring her now that it was too late.
He emphasised the industry's treatment of artists who do not comply, as well as the disparity between how O'Connor was treated in life and how she is now regarded.
