The iPhone 15 series, which includes the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max, is likely to be released this year. According to information that has recently leaked online, Apple's next generation of iPhone models will likely have significant hardware enhancements. The iPhone 15 variants are rumoured to include a USB Type-C connector and enhanced rear cameras, while the Pro models, like the iPhone 14, are supposed to have a new 3nm CPU, titanium edges, increased zoom capability, and readily repairable internals.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports in the newest issue of his monthly Power On newsletter that Apple's next iPhone 15 Pro will lose its immediately recognisable stainless steel edges in favour of a harder material - titanium. This means that the company's forthcoming Pro models will be more robust than previous generations. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, like last year's iPhone 14, will have updated internals to make them easier to fix, he says.
The iPhone 15 Pro will be powered by a new 3nm technology that will boost performance over last year's Pro models, according to Gurman, who claims the new CPU is "noticeably snappier." Customers who purchase the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, on the other hand, will allegedly receive the 4nm A16 Bionic processor featured in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
According to Gurman, Apple will use "low-injection pressure over-moulding" to shrink the size of the bezels surrounding its iPhone 15 Pro line of handsets to 1.5mm this year, down from 2.2mm on the 14 Pro models. Meanwhile, the notch will be removed from the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus in lieu of the Dynamic Island seen on last year's Pro models.
Previous sources indicate that the next iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus would have a 48-megapixel primary camera rather than the 12-megapixel one used on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, and Gurman claims that the biggest model — the iPhone 15 Pro Max — will have better optical zoom. Apple's next-generation iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected to include a periscope camera, a feature found on high-end Android devices.
Gurman also confirms that the iPhone 15 series will ditch the now-outdated — and slower — Lightning connection in lieu of a USB Type-C interface. Apple is likely to implement this hardware update in order to comply with EU regulations that take effect in December 2024.
Meanwhile, Apple's Project Bongo plans to improve the handset's durability by including solid-state buttons for the volume buttons, power button, and mute switch have been scrapped, according to Gurman, who claims that only the mute switch will be replaced by an Action button.
According to Gurman, Apple will not release a new Apple Watch SE model this year, but the future Watch Series 9 models and the second-generation Apple Watch Ultra will be outfitted with a new — and powerful — S9 processor. Later this year, Apple is likely to disclose plans for new smartphone and wearable models.
