The marriage of King Charles and Princess Diana was fraught from the start.
Despite knowing that Charles was in love with Camilla Parker, the former Princess of Wales maintained her marriage to him.
Diana put all of her 'eggs in one basket,' according to former royal butler Paul Burrell.
"Did you see [Diana's] face when the [then-Prince of Wales] was asked, 'Are you in love, sir?'" he says. and he said, 'Whatever love is.' She turned to him and giggled nervously, thinking, 'Don't you know?' since, of course, she had fallen in love with her prince. Any young woman would. She was just 18 years old when she met him, and he was the first male to offer her genuine attention, and she fell in love with him. She was completely taken aback by her prince, who was about to whisk her away to a wonderful future and a fairy tale castle someplace. She was quite innocent."
"[Diana] put all her eggs in one basket, and [Charles] played that game," he continued. He did it despite the fact that there was someone in the wings and that [Camilla] was always around, which Diana was aware of. She adored him and believed she could change him. She assumed Charles would be attracted to her attractiveness, freshness, and innocence, but he wasn't since he was searching for someone more mature."
