Canada paid for additional police presence during Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's visit to an Invictus Games event in February.
This decision differs from Canada's prior policy, which stated that government money would not be used for the Sussexes' protection once they stood down as working royals, according to GB news.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex resigned their royal responsibilities in 2020, first moving to Canada then returning to the United States later that year. They returned to Canada in February to preview the 2025 Invictus Games, which will take place in Vancouver.
During their visit, Vancouver police spent C$44,555 on security-related overtime, mostly to guarantee public safety surrounding the Invictus event among unrelated demonstrations.
According to an Invictus Games spokesman, private benefactors covered the Sussexes' personal security costs. A freedom of information request found that the Invictus Games covered C$10,221 in security expenditures, leaving Canadian taxpayers accountable for C$34,333 in overtime payments.
In related news, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be accompanied by a huge security force during their planned four-day trip of Colombia in August, with Colombian taxpayers bearing the bill.
