Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, co-writers of Deadpool and Wolverine, recently addressed why Robert Downey Jr. denied a cameo in the film.
Speaking with IndieWire, Rhett and Paul claimed that they were unaware of the new casting and contacted Robert to play Iron Man in Ryan Reynolds' third Deadpool movie.
"Behind the scenes, we didn't know about the Doctor Doom [casting]," Paul told me.
He went on, "And there was no way he was going to do both." And we thought, 'Oh, Downey doesn't say "no" to Ryan Reynolds, does he? Nobody says no to Ryan Reynolds. Ryan gave him the hard press."
"We wrote scenes, and Downey read the scenes, but what we didn't know behind the scenes was this Doctor Doom thing," Paul told us.
In another part of the interview, Rhett stated that Robert "was the only 'no' we've ever gotten, I think, in terms of people just saying, 'Hey, I don't want to do it'".
"I mean, look, we would have loved to have Downey," Rhett said.
He made the point, "But, at the same time, I think Marvel had this ace in their hole, which is he's about to come back in this different character."
"So, to have him as Tony Stark? Knowing that Doctor Doom will follow shortly after? "It just didn't make sense," Rhett explained.
Meanwhile, Robert will return to the MCU in the Avengers films Doomsday and Secret Wars, which will be released in 2026 and 2027, respectively.
