Kim Raver, who plays Dr. Teddy Altman on Grey's Anatomy, discussed her experience as a female director on the show's set.
Raver, who also helmed the season 19 episode "Training Day," offered her thoughts at a panel at the D23 fan event in Anaheim, California, on August 10.
She emphasized the unique qualities of working on Shonda Rhimes' program, stating that the setting is unlike any other set in the entertainment world.
"I came up in the business where there were just... there [were] a lot of men, which is great — love all of you," she joked, but went on to say she "didn't get to see a lot of women doing a lot of the jobs."
Raver discovered a supportive atmosphere in "Shondaland" that allowed her to follow her dream of directing.
While the route was not easy, Raver valued the advice and support she received from her colleagues, especially Kevin McKidd and Chandra Wilson, who assisted her in navigating the process.
McKidd, a seasoned director with 42 episodes under his belt, and Wilson contributed significantly to Raver's development as a filmmaker.
"Everyone wanted me to just do my best, which is an incredible feeling but I also got to see other women directing and other women editing and writing and showrunning," says Raver.
She made it clear that, while she had previously directed one television film, Tempting Fate, directing chances do not come by chance for Grey's Anatomy cast members.
"You really, really have to work hard," Raver told the crowd.
