Kelly Ripa and her husband, Mark Consuelos, are struggling with loss following a "toughest" decision they were forced to make as a married couple.
On the Wednesday program of Live with Kelly and Mark, the pair disclosed that their beloved dog Chewie died on Tuesday, February 4th, at the age of 17.
The pet owners' podcast episode began with the tragic news, "We had a terrible day yesterday. We had to say our goodbyes to Chewie yesterday.
After putting down the white and brown Shih Tzu, they revealed that the pet had stopped eating for a few days and had been eating less and less over the previous few weeks.
"She was extremely dehydrated and had some neurological stuff going down," Consuelos, 53, revealed following a vet diagnosis after visiting their residence to check on Chewie. "And you think, 'Okay, I'm doing the right thing; this won't be easy, but...' It's certainly one of the most difficult things we've had to face as a married couple."
The All My Children alum emphasized that only pet owners can appreciate their grief and sadness as they grieve the demise of their animal companion.
"It is grief. "It really is grief," he said. "But knowing that we did the right thing because it was just going to be really, really, really bad over the next few days for her."
For those who are unaware, Ripa, 54, and Consuelos adopted Chewie after the actress met the puppy during an adoption piece on Live.
