On Monday, Apple published the iOS 18.5 update for compatible iPhone models. Building on the development and public beta upgrades released in recent weeks, it makes minor modifications to the Mail app, such as the ability to view Contact Photos via a simple shortcut. When a youngster uses the Screen Time passcode on an Apple device, guardians or parents will receive a notice. iOS 18.5 includes a new Pride Harmony wallpaper and compatibility for carrier-provided satellite functions throughout the full iPhone 13 lineup.
OS 18.5 Update for iPhone: What's New
According to Apple's release notes, iPhone users may now select Contact Photos straight from the Mail app's UI by pressing the three-dot option in the top-right corner of the screen after updating to iOS 18.5. It also allows you to switch off the app's Group by Sender feature. Accessing the All Mail view has also been simplified thanks to a minor adjustment in app classification. It now appears among the current Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions choices.
With iOS 18.5, the iPhone receives a new Pride Harmony wallpaper with colors that may change position when the device is moved, locked, or unlocked. It complements the new Pride Harmony face for Apple Watch, which was also included in the most recent watchOS 10.5 update.
The update increases children's monitoring skills by notifying the guardian or parent when the Screen Time password is entered on a device used by a kid. In addition, a new Buy with iPhone option is now available when purchasing content through the Apple TV app on a third-party device.
Another major update is the inclusion of carrier-provided satellite services, which are now accessible throughout the iPhone 13 lineup. Apple claims it allows you to stay connected with your iPhone in regions where there is no cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity. Several carriers formed relationships with satellite providers such as Starlink to strengthen their cellular networks. When this function is enabled, a SAT icon appears in the iPhone's status bar.
In addition to new features, iOS 18.5 addresses various bugs and security concerns. The iPhone 16e has a remedy for a Baseband problem in Apple's proprietary C1 modem, which might have allowed an attacker in a privileged network position to capture network traffic. It was resolved by stronger state administration.
The business also updated float, check, memory, input validation, and state handling to address a security flaw that allowed a rogue website to exfiltrate data across origins and cause unexpected Safari failures while processing maliciously designed information.
The update also addresses problems with Call History, CoreBluetooth, CoreAudio, FaceTime, iCloud Document Sharing, Kernel, Mail Addressing, Notes, and Security.
With WWDC 2025 approaching, the Cupertino-based tech giant is anticipated to turn its emphasis away from the current iOS 18 cycle and toward the future iOS 19 and its goodies.
