Nicholas Hoult always had the potential to be a great Lex Luthor, but he wanted to try his hand at portraying Superman first.
Hoult discusses how he was cast as Lex Luthor, the tech millionaire who becomes Superman's most renowned enemy. The actor also explained how he portrayed the villain to make him just the perfect amount of frightening.
"There was a tiny little inkling voice inside of me," Hoult said to Entertainment Weekly. "I was like, 'Maybe you could do a good job with the Lex stuff.'"
"And then I'd bury that thinking instantly," The Great Star said, "because I was like, 'Hang on! Focus on the Superman sequences. Let it be. Do not get diverted here, Nick."
Hoult had an intuition that he would be better suited to portraying Lex, but he also believed David Corenswet would be the ideal Superman.
When he walked to the audition, he noticed Cprenswet seated there like Superman.
"He was sitting in the sunlight, just like Superman does to charge up, to get his powers back," Hoult told me. "I looked at him and said, 'Wow!'" "That is Superman."
During the audition, Hoult pitched director James Gunn some ideas for portraying Lex and received a call back.
"I kind of let out what I would describe as an evil cackle," he remembered, "because immediately, when I was reading the screenplay and all those gut emotions I'd had, I was like, 'Oh, you were right! That is the character you are most suited to in this scenario.
Nicolas Hoult stated that he intended Lex Luthor to pose a "real, credible" danger to Superman.
