Princess Charlotte, 10, is growing up, and her parents, Kate Middleton and Prince William, are conscious that if they do not nurture her with a purpose, she may wind up feeling like a spare, like her uncle Prince Harry.
Charlotte is second in line to the throne after her brother George, Prince William's heir, thus the future King and Queen are aware of her status.
Royal biographer Robert Hardman, author of The Making of a King, noted how the Late Queen Elizabeth sympathized with everyone in this situation.
"The late Queen [Elizabeth] was always very conscious of that extraordinary and challenging role of the No. 2," Hardman told the news magazine People.
"That's why she had a special soft spot for [her sister] Margaret, [her son] Andrew, and Harry." She knew that being second in a very hierarchical family and institution has obstacles," he stated. "Everyone is conscious of that."
According to Hardman, William is not just "preparing to be King himself but to make the whole royal existence approachable and not scary for all his children."
The Prince and Princess of Wales are well aware that they will need to provide careful assistance to their two younger children, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, who are seven years old.
According to Hardman, Charlotte may be given the title of Princess Royal, as her great-aunt Princess Anne was.
"It could either be seen as an antiquated title or something steeped in history that they will want to respect," a royal insider told me.
A source stated that Prince William and Princess Kate believe that "getting the family right is absolutely critical, particularly in terms of what the nation expects of them."
