Prince Andrew was inadvertently named as the Duke of York on the royal.uk website's official line of succession page, causing a technical hitch for the Royal Family.
In the midst of growing allegations surrounding his acquaintance with Jeffrey Epstein and purported ties to China, the beleaguered monarch said last Friday that he will relinquish the use of his titles, including his dukedom.
With the assumption that he would henceforth just be identified as Prince Andrew, the majority of all references to the title were taken down from the Royal Family's official website after the announcement.
The website describing the line of succession, which specifies the sequence in which members of the Royal Family might become sovereign, does not, however, seem to have received the change.
The page still refers to Andrew as the Duke of York even though he has given up his dukedom, which is an obvious contradiction given that he is still eighth in line for the throne, following Prince William, Prince Harry, and their offspring.
As concerns grow over how much more may be done to limit Prince Andrew's privileges and powers, King Charles is facing an unprecedented constitutional challenge.
The King would require the consent of 14 additional nations that share the British monarch as their head of state, including Canada, Australia, and Papua New Guinea, in order to change the line of succession.
"Such a step would require international agreement because the monarch maintains ceremonial legal influence over domestic matters in each nation where he is head of state, which would naturally require their input on any change to the potential future sovereign," Craig Prescott, a law lecturer at the University of London, told The Conversation.
The circumstance arises when Andrew's apparent ties to China and Jeffrey Epstein come under further investigation.
Prescott clarified that "in theory, an act of Parliament could remove Andrew's princely and HRH status." Nevertheless, even if Parliament were to revoke his royal title, he would still have his present eighth-in-line position, after Prince William, Prince Harry, and their offspring.
An act of Parliament would be needed to legally deprive Andrew of his dukedom, but more drastic steps like completely renouncing his princely title and removing him from the line of succession are also being considered as ways to deal with the crisis.
