James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, said that his initial intention for Gamora, played by Zoe Saldana, was to murder her off in Vol. 2.
But Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Louis D'Esposito talked him out of it, and Yondu, played by Michael Rooker, was killed off instead. Ironically, Gamora died in Avengers: Infinity War and was subsequently resurrected from an other reality in Avengers: Endgame.
"I knew from the beginning Zoe only wanted to play the character for so many years, and she's been very honest saying that she's done [after this]," Gunn told Comicbook.com. So I was going to let her die. I assumed she was going to make the ultimate sacrifice... [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige] and Louis [D'Esposito] talked me out of it, and it simply didn't work out. It didn't feel quite right. It felt much more natural to go where we went in that film. That seemed appropriate for the story."
It is uncertain if Gamora will live in Vol. 3, as Gunn has creative authority and Marvel is allowing him to do anything he wants.
After directing three "Guardians" films, James Gunn, the new co-head of DC Studios, will formally leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe to begin his new full-time position as co-head of DC Studios, where he will be establishing a new DC Universe across cinema, television, and video games.
Meanwhile, following the release of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," Zoe Saldaa and Dave Bautista, both of whom starred in the "Guardians" films, have announced that they, too, will be leaving Marvel.
