Meghan Markle had to reconsider her expectations of royal life after marrying Prince Harry, according to a new book.
The Duchess of Sussex, who grew up in Los Angeles and then attended Northwestern University, apparently had an Americanized picture of royalty—one of grandeur, unlimited money, and opulent privileges.
However, royal expert Tom Quinn argues in his new book, Yes Ma'am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants, that Meghan was taken by surprise.
According to passages published by The Times, the author claims Meghan was taken aback when she discovered that Prince Harry's personal riches was far beyond what she had expected.
"She had a very Hollywood-style view of what it meant to be royal," Quinn writes, quoting a palace source who reportedly stated, "She expected a billionaire and got a millionaire."
This realization, he argues, caused Meghan to reevaluate her previous ideas about life under the monarchy.
Meghan has already discussed the difficulties of assimilating to royal traditions. In the Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan, she described having to learn royal procedure on the fly, including the skill of curtsying, before meeting Queen Elizabeth II.
Her shift from Hollywood actress to British royal was fraught with lessons, some of which seemed more unexpected than others.
