The initial candidate for the character of Steve in A Minecraft Movie has been revealed, and many are disappointed since the film might have been so much better.
According to Puck, Matt Berry, the British star of the comedies Toast of London and What We Do in the Shadows, was supposed to feature in the project.
However, he left out owing to schedule issues created by the Hollywood actors' strike in 2023.
According to the Independent, despite the film's record-breaking box office triumph in 2025, it has received scathing criticism and bad reviews, particularly regarding Jack Black's portrayal.
According to the outlet's correspondent, the actor appeared to be "a desperate clown at an under-attended children's party."
Fans are already lamenting the loss of their first pick for the part, claiming that the film might have been far better if Berry had portrayed it. Especially if he could have used the famous Minecraft term "chicken jockey."
On X (previously Twitter), a user said, "I'm definitely not saying 'chicken jockey' in the voice of Matt Berry right now…"
"Torn between 'Matt Berry's too good for that' and 'I want to hear him say chicken jockey,'" said another.
A third person concurred: "Laughing really hard imagining Matt Berry saying 'chicken jockey' so maybe it would've been a good movie if this happened."
"Hearing 'chicken jockey' come out of matt berry's mouth would've absolutely grilled me HELLO???," a another individual wrote.
Black appears in A Minecraft Movie opposite Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge, and Emma Myers.
On April 4, a Minecraft movie aired.
