A big international team of researchers, lead by Simone Ferraro of the University of California, Berkeley, has just found that the hydrogen gas cloud that surrounds most galaxies is far larger than scientists previously thought. According to the study, which was published in the online pre-print journal arXiv, its scope is so vast that it might account for the majority of the universe's missing stuff.
The Search for the Missing Matter
The researchers conducted their inquiry using data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). The researchers used this technology to collect photos of around 7 million galaxies in order to measure the moderate halos of ionized hydrogen gas at the borders of the galaxies, which are not visible using conventional methods. So the researchers examined the residual radiation from the Big Bang, which is distributed throughout the universe. If these weak halos join the other galaxies, a vast cosmic network will emerge, accounting for hitherto unknown mass.
Black Holes On Duty
This revelation may also alter our understanding of black hole behavior. Scientists first assumed that blackholes emitted a large amount of gasses early in their life cycle. According to the findings, these black holes are far more common in action than previously believed. According to astronomer Boryana Hadzhiyska, one of the hypotheses is that black holes turn on and off during their duty cycle.
