Matt Bomer is correcting the record—and doing it with the same composure and grace that has made him a fan favorite for years.
While some lifelong fans may still fantasize about him soaring across Metropolis in a cape, Bomer has officially moved on from the Superman that could've been, and he's more focused on enjoying his present.
The actor, who currently stars in the Hulu sitcom Mid-Century Modern, recently addressed a persistent rumor that he lost the Superman part after being publicly outed.
"This conversation had nothing to do with Superman, so please stop painting me into a victim narrative for your own clickbait," he texted.
"I adore my job and wouldn't alter anything about it. We discussed a lack of journalistic ethics, and you've done the same thing. Please do better. Matt, I wish you the best always."
Bomer, who openly came out in 2012, previously stated that he was seriously considered for a Superman revival.
"I went in on a cattle call for Superman, and then it turned into a one-month audition experience where I was auditioning again and again and again," according to him.
"It looked like I was the director's choice for the role."
When questioned directly if his sexuality influenced the studio's decision to pass on him, Bomer was frank.
"Yes, that's what I understand. That was a moment in the industry when such a weapon might still be used against you. I'm not sure how, why, or who, but that's what I comprehend.
When Bomer spoke with Deadline about the part, he couldn't stop gushing. "I cannot tell you how liberating it is to play a character without shame," he told me.
