Google unveiled the Android XR Glasses at the annual Google I/O Developers Conference in California on Tuesday. These AI-powered glasses, developed through an extended relationship with Samsung, bring Gemini to the smart glasses lineup. Google is also collaborating with eyewear firms such as Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to create the new smart glasses. They have a live language translation function and speakers. The glasses may be connected to smartphones to run apps and have an optional in-lens display for unobtrusive information viewing.
Google Shows Off Android XR-Based Glasses
The Alphabet-owned tech giant unveiled its intentions for Gemini-powered Android XR smart spectacles at the Google I/O 2025. Google is teaming with Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker to develop smart spectacles. Looking ahead, the brand intends to collaborate with new partners, such as Kering Eyewear, to broaden the range of smart glasses available to consumers.
These smart glasses have cameras, microphones, and speakers. They will function with the attached smartphone to provide consumers hands-free access. An optional in-lens display quietly displays useful information just when consumers need it. According to Google, the Android XR glasses can see and hear the wearer's surroundings because to Gemini integration, which provides contextual awareness to help the user recall what is most important to them during the day.
During the event, Google demonstrated how its apps may appear on XR glasses. The preview also demonstrated how Android XR glasses may be used in common scenarios like as contacting friends, scheduling appointments, asking for turn-by-turn instructions, and capturing photographs, among other things. The live translation capability was also shown, with the glasses displaying subtitles in real time between two persons, breaking down linguistic barriers.
Google stated that it is creating a single software and reference hardware platform to allow the ecosystem to manufacture smart eyewear. Developers are expected to begin working with this platform later this year. Google began collecting input from trustworthy testers using early prototypes, with more information on developments to be shared in the coming months.
This move places Google in direct rivalry with Meta's Ray-Ban Meta and other smart glasses on the market. Apple is also said to be building its own smart eyewear.
