Before the iPhone 17 Air is released later this autumn, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge will reveal where the market stands for lighter, ultra-thin mobile phones.
Samsung has been toying with my emotions by releasing teasers for its next Galaxy S25 Edge phone since it was initially introduced at Unpacked in January. I had a closer look at the phone at Mobile World Congress a few months ago, and since then, it's been in the back of my mind anytime I've tried a new device and pondered how much thinner these things might get.
Samsung has announced that a Virtual Unpacked event for the Galaxy S25 Edge will take place on Monday, May 12, at 8 p.m. ET, so I should have the answer next week. Is Samsung hoping we'll return to the live stream after dinner? Maybe.
However, a more plausible explanation is that it is targeting the group that is most likely to accept the S25 Edge's lighter, thinner form factor: Koreans, who will be tuned in to a more favorable Tuesday morning show.
Ahead of the presentation, Samsung has verified some details regarding the phone. While its twin camera system may not indicate it, the forthcoming smartphone is strongly focused on photography. "Even with its slim form, the Galaxy S25 Edge's 200MP wide lens continues Galaxy's iconic camera experience," Samsung stated in a press statement on Wednesday.
It's unclear whether the new model's second camera lens is a telephoto, ultrawide, or simply a macro sensor.
In terms of the phone's hardware, Samsung has announced that the Galaxy S25 Edge would be "portable and lightweight without sacrificing power and innovation." Here's hope that "power" refers to battery life, which remains a disadvantage as phones slim down, because the laws of physics just do not allow for bigger lithium-ion batteries to fit within the form factors.
For perspective, the next iPhone 17 Air is believed to have a smaller-than-usual battery and may require a separate battery cover to function for the entire day. If the future of slim phones is thicker, plastic-built protective coverings, I'm not convinced we're making progress with these developments.
Expect this virtual Unpacked event to be shorter than others, as it will include fewer new Galaxy goods. If we're lucky, we'll learn about the rest of Samsung's hardware roadmap by 2025. However, with the company's annual summer Unpacked event just a few months away, I wouldn't be shocked if they kept their cards close to their breast. After all, hyping a tri-folding phone or an XR headset might potentially overshadow the ultra-slim Galaxy phone.
And if there's one thing Samsung and Apple don't want to do, it's lose interest in their ultra-slim phone ambitions before they ever launch. After all, both businesses (and any who follow suit) will need to create handsets that exceed expectations and persuade the people that perhaps the future of mobile is something that fits in pockets more easily, even if it means sacrificing durability and the number of cameras available.
Starting today, anybody interested in the Galaxy S25 Edge may place a preorder and earn a $50 Samsung credit toward the phone. You do not have to commit to purchasing the phone after making the reservation, but if you do, you will receive $50 for free.
