Samsung is apparently developing a new artificial intelligence (AI) capability that can convert photos into movies. According to a source, the South Korean tech giant is working on an AI-powered image-to-video function that would turn any photo in the user's gallery into a "few-second-long" film. There are no more specifics about the feature available, but it is expected to be part of the company's Galaxy AI suite of capabilities, which might be released with the next One UI 8.0 operating system (OS) upgrade in the coming months.
Samsung's AI Video Generation Tool Could Utilize Google's Veo 2 Model
In a post on X (previously known as Twitter), tipster PandaFlash stated that Samsung is working on an image-to-video AI function for future devices. The tipster also claims that the function can generate a few-second movie with a single photograph as a reference. No additional information was provided.
The news comes just days after the firm announced that the Honor 400 series will have an image-to-video tool capable of producing up to five-second films using photographs as input. TikTok has also introduced a similar function, AI Alive.
It's worth mentioning that both of these capabilities just animate the image in different fashions rather than creating innovative and abstract films using the source image as a reference point. In some ways, it functions more as an augmentation than a generation feature.
Honor said that its AI functionality would be powered by Google's Veo 2 video generating algorithm. It is probable that Samsung will employ the same model to provide the image-to-video functionality. In 2024, the business collaborated with the Mountain View-based tech titan to offer the Circle to Search function in the Galaxy S24 series.
Samsung's AI-powered video production tool would enhance Galaxy AI's multimodal capabilities. The package already includes tools for generating pictures from text prompts or image inputs. However, there are currently no video generating tools. This yet unidentified feature is thought to be part of the One UI 8.0 version.
The IT behemoth is also apparently developing an AI-powered video summarization tool. This application is said to be capable of producing a written summary of any web video. The functionality apparently works with sites such as YouTube and Vimeo.
