The Weeknd recently stated that he hid his insecurities under his music.
The 35-year-old musician, who is preparing to debut his film Hurry Up Tomorrow, which stars himself, Jenna Ortega, and Barry Keoghan, described working with filmmaker Trey Edward Shults as a "therapy session."
In an interview with The Guardian, the Blinding Lights singer stated, "Before we shot the film, I went through whatever healing I needed to go through." And then I needed to lose that skin, and I wanted to do so in a more visual manner."
"If it hadn't been for [Trey], I would have put it in the vault, as I have with many other records. But it felt natural to say it," The Weeknd said.
He went on to say, "Men have this forcefield - it's as if we want to appear indestructible, and vulnerability is something you avoid. I was able to be vulnerable via my music while yet hiding behind it.
"It was fresh for me to trust someone like Trey and allow myself to be vulnerable. "It felt like a therapy session for all of us," the Save Your Tears singer explained.
"I was able to confront my childhood self. We go through so much as youngsters that we don't recall anything; we just suppress it. "If you don't deal with it, it comes out," The Weeknd said.
