Tom Cruise's next film, following Mission: Impossible - Final Reckoning, will be very different.
In an unexpected turn for the actor, Cruise will next be seen in a dark comedy, but he has brought the same amount of "wild" to the comedy as he does to his action films.
The filmmaker, Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman and The Revenant), has teased the picture, currently named Judy, for its "brutal, wild comedy.".
At the Cannes Film Festival, Alejandro G. Iñárritu described the film as a "brutal, wild comedy of catastrophic proportions." "That's insane."
"It's terrifying, humorous, and lovely. I understand that humor is not what people anticipate from me or Tom, and producing this picture was scary for me, but I don't want to repeat myself, and every film should scare you a bit," he said.
Iñárritu gained recognition for his films Birdman and The Revenant, released in 2014 and 2015. Birdman won Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture at the 87th Academy Awards, while The Revenant won Best Director the following year, as well as Leonardo DiCaprio's first Best Actor Oscar.
"I felt Birdman was a comedy, a dark comedy, and this one was challenging like that," the filmmaker remarked. "Tom makes me chuckle every day. "He has this total dedication, this total madness."
Judy co-stars Tom Cruise, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Emma D'Arcy, Sophie Wilde, Michael Stuhlbarg, and John Goodman. The picture is slated to hit theaters in the fall of 2026.
