Kevin Smith, an American film director, recently offered his honest opinions on James Gunn's new Superman.
Speaking with Deadline, Kevin praised the latest Superman teaser for its innovative approach to humanity and present political topics.
"It feels more comic book-y," explained the 34-year-old.
Kevin referred to the first point: "putting his trunks on the outside again is just charming, and including the dog is not something we've seen over the course of the last 10 years" .
"I believe that's a wise decision, guy. Unless they injure the dog, which is also a powerful, dramatic option. But it simply looks so lovely," said the Dogma filmmaker.
Kevin further made reference to "this theory that I didn't come up with, it's been around forever, where whether Batman or Superman is ascendant and dominant in the culture has everything to do with where we are as a country" .
That's why the filmmaker said, "When times are good for Americans and prosperous, oddly enough, Batman is the dominant character because Batman is a dark fantasy about everything going wrong."
However, the opposing idea is that "Superman is ascendant whenever the country is doing poorly or needs help, and that's when that character plays strongest," as Kevin noted.
"People want hope right now," he said.
Kevin also appreciated the trailer for depicting it from "the perspective of a journalist, especially if it's Lois Lane".
"Making James answer for all the things that, when they created that character, nobody ever once thought about, but now we live in an era where you can't just do something good without it being political as well, it's a smart sell on the movie," said the writer-director.
Meanwhile, James' Superman will open in theaters on July 11.
