According to sources, the regular iPhone 17 model has 8GB of RAM, while the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max variants have 12GB. Apple does not formally provide the RAM numbers for iPhones. There are already rumors that the regular iPhone 18 from next year will have even more RAM. According to reports, Apple requested an increase in RAM capacity from its primary supplier for the iPhone 18. The sophisticated AI features anticipated in the next range may be supported by the additional RAM.
iPhone 18 could have more RAM than the iPhone 17
The Bell, a South Korean publication, claims that Apple has requested that Samsung, its RAM supplier, expand its supply of LPDDR5x chips for the next iPhone model. It is anticipated that the standard iPhone 18 will have a notable 50% boost in RAM over the iPhone 17.According to reports, Samsung manufactures 12GB and 16GB modules of LPDDR5x RAM. The basic iPhone 18 may receive a RAM bump to 12GB, a significant increase over the iPhone 17, if LPDDR5x RAM is utilized on all models in the range. According to reports, Apple is also negotiating with Micron and SK Hynix for more mobile DRAM supplies.
The decision to give the iPhone 18 models more RAM may be in line with the rising need for on-device AI processing. The business may be able to grow Apple Intelligence with the more RAM to provide better AI experiences in the base model.
Given that the iPhone 18 is probably still in the early stages of development, any current hardware rumors should be treated with caution.
While its more costly brothers have 8GB of RAM, the iPhone 15 only had 6GB. All iPhone 16 models from the previous year have 8GB of RAM. Apple's iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air came this year with an A19 Pro CPU and 12GB of RAM. In comparison, the standard iPhone 17 retains Apple's A19 processor and 8GB.
Apple would be better able to compete in the high-end smartphone market if the regular iPhone 18 model had more RAM, especially when compared to Chinese companies that already sell smartphones with up to 24GB of RAM.
The iPhone 18 Pro series and a foldable iPhone are expected to be released by Apple in late 2026. According to recent sources, the normal iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e are expected to be released in the first half of 2027.
