The Scottish National Party (SNP) is stepping up its attempts to divest Prince Andrew of his remaining royal titles once and for all.
Despite pulling back from using his titles, Andrew legally keeps them, and only an Act of Parliament may officially remove them.
Frustrated by what they call Westminster's "stubbornly slow" reaction, the SNP has promised to force Sir Keir Starmer's administration to act.
"If the Westminster parties remain stubbornly slow in removing Prince Andrew's titles, the SNP will do everything we can to force them to act," stated SNP MP Stephen Flynn, emphasizing that symbolic gestures will no longer satisfy popular outrage.
The campaign to deprive him of his remaining royal titles has escalated, with SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn urging Starmer's administration to stop "dragging its feet" and move immediately.
"Prince Andrew's titles can only be removed by an Act of Parliament," says Flynn, "so this motion is designed to pile pressure on the UK Labour government to bring forward that legislation immediately."
He didn't mince words when he questioned the Prime Minister's delay, saying, "The only real question is, what is Keir Starmer's government waiting for? The public understands this is the correct thing to do, and the victims of the Epstein affair know it as well."
Flynn went on to claim that individuals involved in the Epstein network had "hidden behind their power and privilege for too long," and that if Labour failed to act, they would be "sitting on their hands" on a question of justice and accountability.
Labour MP Rachael Maskell has reiterated her plea for Parliament to take decisive action on Prince Andrew's titles, stating that the King should be given official authority to revoke them.
"Having sought to change the law through my Removal of Titles Bill, I now think it's time for this legislation to move forward," Maskell said yesterday.
The York Central MP, whose seat shares the Duke of York's title, emphasized that the relationship is completely unsuitable. "
"I have long advocated for the removal of the title of Duke of York, as it has an ambassadorial connection to our city," she stated.
"York is England's only UN Human Rights City and stands for a higher set of values and when polled, 80 percent of York residents voted for the title's removal."
Downing Street, on the other hand, appeared to assign all responsibility to Buckingham Palace.
The Prime Minister's official spokesperson stated that any legislation to legally deprive the Duke of his titles was "a matter for the palace in the first instance," and that ministers would "support the King's judgment."
He also acknowledged the seriousness of the larger issue, stating that the Prime Minister's "thoughts are very much with the victims and survivors of Jeffrey Epstein, who suffered and continue to suffer."
