A recent Windows 11 problem that caused USB devices to malfunction in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) has been fixed by Microsoft. After customers updated the security update KB5066835 earlier this month, the problem surfaced. The tech business has released an improved out-of-band (OOB) upgrade to address the issue. The most recent version, 26200.6901 and 26100.6901, has been made available. For consumers whose PCs are unable to boot to Windows because of WinRE USB problems, Microsoft has also suggested a few solutions.
Microsoft Restores Mouse and Keyboard Input Access Within WinRE
Several people on Reddit and Microsoft's support forums criticized the October 14 release of the KB5066835 upgrade. Users complained at the time because WinRE did not support USB peripherals, such as keyboards and mice. After acknowledging the problem, Microsoft sent an emergency OOB update a week later to address it.
Improvements and security fixes from the problematic KB5066835 update are included in this more recent cumulative Windows 11 KB5070773 upgrade. There are two versions of the update available: 26200.6901 and 26100.6901.
"This problem makes it impossible to navigate through any of WinRE's recovery options. Please take note that the USB devices are still functioning properly in Windows," Microsoft stated in a statement.
Computers running Windows Server 2025, 24H2, and 25H2 were impacted by the WinRE USB support problem. A number of AI components, including Image Search, Content Extraction, Semantic Analysis, and Settings Model, have been updated in the KB5070773 release.
If the WinRE USB problem prevents your computer from booting to Windows, Microsoft offers a few solutions. It is recommended that users of touchscreen PCs browse WinRE using the on-screen keyboard. If your computer is compatible, it also suggests attaching a PS/2 keyboard or mouse. Users can use WinRE to restore USB capability if they have already produced a USB recovery disk.
Among the many issues with the October update is the WinRE USB support flaw. In the October update, Microsoft also noted difficulties with smartcard authentication and playback of restricted content in certain DVD and Blu-ray programs.
