Apple is developing an upcoming framework called AppMigrationKit, which is intended to make it easier to move app data between iOS devices and non-Apple platforms, particularly Android. The framework will be compatible with forthcoming iOS 26 releases, and it will allow developers to migrate their app's data once. AppMigrationKit allows for the import and export of app data, complementing Apple's planned Transfer to Android capability. It is presently in beta, and the framework represents Apple's efforts to simplify cross-platform data conversion.
How Apple's AppMigrationKit API Can Simplify iOS-to-Android App Data Transfers
According to 9to5Mac, the new AppMigrationKit framework is compatible with Apple devices running iOS 26.1 and iPadOS 26.1, as well as future releases. Currently in development, the technology is believed to allow developers to migrate their app data across Apple and Android. Although the framework's availability alongside iOS 26.1 has not been confirmed, the public documentation hints that it will be available soon.
The business has said that AppMigrationKit is only meant for cross-platform transfers and does not facilitate data migration between iOS and iPadOS devices. It also does not support iOS apps that run on VisionOS or MacOS.
When you set up a new device, any AppMigrationKit-integrated apps will immediately include their data, and developers can import cloud-stored data after the transfer. According to the newspaper, the framework will function alongside the future "Transfer to Android" option in Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone, guiding consumers through the one-time conversion procedure.
Apple has also stated that Android will include a similar "Transfer to iPhone" feature, first providing an eSIM transfer tool. Developers preparing for AppMigrationKit should read Apple's documentation on app extensions, data operations, migration statistics, and testing code. Apple emphasizes that the framework is in beta and susceptible to change, and that any implementation should be tested against the final operating system version.
Last year, Google relaunched its Data Restore Tool as Android Switch, which is now available on the App Store and Google Play with a new symbol and the tagline "Google's official transfer app." The program allows users to transfer conversations, contacts, calendars, Wi-Fi networks, Google accounts, and other data from an iPhone to an Android device, as well as instructions on how to disable iMessage. Contacts, calendars, and photos/videos may be transferred by cable or the cloud, but messages, applications, music, and notes require a cable connection.
