Prince William and Kate Middleton may have led the drive to become the most relatable couple in the world, but it appears that they overdid it.
Daniela Elser, a royal critic, remarked that if William and Kate maintained "going down this painfully transparent path, they are liable to start putting people off them, quick sticks."
Elser noted in a comment post for News.com.au that Wales does not need to utilise sleazy advertising strategies to entice people to support projects that are actually worthwhile.
"If the monarchy is as relevant and useful an institution as the king and the Waleses would have us believe," Elser said, "then the actual work should speak for itself."
The expert stated that William has taken up a worthy cause in his efforts to reduce homelessness in the country, and he is also striving to promote critical solutions to the climate catastrophe. Elser pointed out that while "a little puffery and feather-plumping is expected," "results, not likes, views, or comments, are what ultimately matter."
She went on to say that while William and Kate are doing wonderful things, they need to "hit the brakes, pronto, on all the self-glorifying claptrap."
Elser's post drew parallels between their recent advertising actions and those of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
She told William and Kate to "ask themselves what Harry and Meghan would do in any situation." And then do the inverse."
