Liam Payne, the late One Direction popstar, appeared to struggle to find success once the band broke up.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the musician's songwriting collaborator and former Ordinary Boys vocalist Sam Preston opened out about Payne's issues with comparisons to his former bandmates.
"To see his bandmates and have that direct comparison it's unavoidable for him to see that all the time," according to him.
"And if there was someone who's prone to addictive, problematic behaviour, then I think that's just a very difficult situation to be in."
Following the band's temporary sabbatical in 2016, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, and Niall Horan pursued separate careers, while Louis Tomlinson released his debut album three years later.
As the other group members had immediate success with their respective ventures, Payne teamed with Preston to concentrate on his solo album.
However, the Ordinary Boy popstar acknowledged that Payne put pressure on himself to keep up with his old colleagues.
"He said, 'Well, I have to be the most successful male solo artist, or I'm a failure.'" But that's an almost impossible assignment," he told the publication.
Despite Payne's desire to appear on par with his colleagues, Preston observed, "You could sense there was a real brilliance to him that he was almost afraid of letting people see." He was a superb musician who could be so raw."
Liam Payne died last year on October 16th, after falling from a balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the age of 31. His cause of death was described as "multiple traumas."
