Nottingham Cottage, a two-bedroom cottage on Kensington Palace grounds, holds special significance for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle because it is their first home together.
Previously occupied by Prince William and Princess Kate, it also served as a temporary home for Prince George following his birth.
The Duke of Sussex relocated in 2013 and proposed to Meghan there, but royal biographer Tom Quinn, according to The Mirror, said Meghan was displeased with the cottage, believing it too tiny and emblematic of the royal family's contempt for Harry.
A member of the palace staff who frequently assisted at Nottingham Cottage allegedly shared Meghan's perspective, stating that she struggled to grasp the royal family's ideals, which favor humility and simplicity above worldly goods.
Quinn went on to say, "A rather beautiful house on the grounds of a famous palace hardly seemed to Harry the equivalent of being forced to live in a shed at the end of the garden." But for Meghan, things were more complicated. She noticed Kate and William living just a few yards away at Kensington Palace, with teams of live-in staff."
The renowned cottage has also been referenced on various occasions. In his shocking memoir Spare, Harry wrote: "I was delighted to welcome Meg to my house, but also humiliated. "Nott Cott was not a palace."
Before the birth of their first child, Archie, Harry, and Meghan moved from Nottingham Cottage to Frogmore Cottage in 2019. The latter, a gift from the late Queen, is located on the grounds of Windsor Castle.
Nonetheless, allegations surfaced that Meghan was once again dissatisfied with their living circumstances, prompting her to make a request to the monarch that the Queen felt "inappropriate".
