On Monday, Apple published the iPadOS 17.7.8 update. It comes as a follow-up to the iPadOS 17.7.7 firmware, which was released a few days ago but was quickly retracted owing to a number of reported difficulties, including the inability to connect to the iPad using Touch ID identification. According to the Cupertino-based tech giant, the current update addresses multiple security problems detected in prior versions that might lead to unexpected system termination, leakage of memory contents or user information, and denial-of-service.
What is new in iPadOS 17.7.8 update?
According to Apple, the iPadOS 17.7.8 update is now available with the build number 21H440. It is compatible with three iPad models: the iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2017), the iPad Pro 10.5-inch, and the iPad (2018). The update updates iOS 17.7.7 software, which was published last week but apparently caused several applications to revert to their initial setup screens and prevented users from entering in using Touch ID biometric authentication.
The release notes claim that it includes a remedy for an AirDrop security issue that might have allowed an app to view arbitrary file information. It was fixed by enforcing extra permissions. The business also resolved a double free problem in the Audio component by enhancing the checks that caused unexpected system termination.
According to the iPhone manufacturer, a bug in iCloud Document Sharing was uncovered, which may have allowed an attacker to enable sharing of an iCloud folder without authentication. It was addressed with extra entitlement checks. Meanwhile, an attacker with physical access to the device might have accessed Notes straight from the lock screen, a vulnerability that was fixed by enhancing authentication.
Several flaws were also identified in the Kernel, causing an app to leak sensitive kernel state, resulting in unexpected system termination, corrupt kernel memory, or unexpected app termination. Apple stated that it addressed the concerns by removing the susceptible code, improving memory handling, and memory management.
Additional bugs were identified in Mail Addressing, Parental Controls, Security, StoreKit, Weather, and WebKit. The iPadOS 17.7.8 update has now addressed these issues.
