Elden Ring, FromSoftware's award-winning action-RPG sensation, will be adapted into a live-action feature. Bandai Namco and boutique film production house A24 will work together to create the adaptation, which will be directed by British director Alex Garland, the two firms said on Friday. A24 is well-known for producing unique arthouse productions, which range from Oscar-winning films like Everything Everywhere All at Once to film festival favorites like Past Lives.
Elden Ring Movie Announced
The revelation follows a string of successful live-action video game adaptations, including A Minecraft Movie, which debuted last month and is now approaching $1 billion (approximately Rs. 8,528 crore) at the global box office. Garland, known for his work on sci-fi films such as Ex Machina and Annihilation, will write and direct the Elden Ring picture. George RR Martin, who worked with developer FromSoftare on the game's plot and setting, will co-produce the project with Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, and Vince Gerardis, according to Bandai Namco's statement.
Alex Garland recently co-directed Warfare, which was also distributed by A24. The film on the Iraq War was released in March. Last year, Garland worked on A24's Civil War, a political action thriller.
With the popularity of TV programs like HBO's The Last of Us and Amazon Prime Video's Fallout, live-action video game adaptations are in style this season. The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed more over $1 billion internationally in 2023. There have been a few misfires. Last year's Borderlands film adaption received widespread criticism and flopped at the movie office. That has not prevented producers, who have already announced hundreds of video game adaptations.
A24 is apparently collaborating with Kojima Productions on a live-action rendition of Death Stranding. Film adaptations of notable games such as Ghost of Tsushima, Legend of Zelda, Helldivers, Days Gone, and many others are now in the works.
Elden Ring game director Hidetaka Miyazaki ruled out a video game sequel to the critically acclaimed action-RPG in December 2024, but did say the Elden Ring IP may be explored in other forms. "We don't have any particular plans for Elden Ring 2," Miyazaki remarked on December 3 at the PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 Japan Asia event. "I would like to tell you that we are not ruling out the development of the IP 'Elden Ring' in some form in the future," he’d stated.
Elden Ring was released on PC and console in 2022 to tremendous critical praise. Last month, FromSoftware said that the game has sold more than 30 million copies in the three years after its debut. Bandai Namco and FromSoftware plan to release Elden Ring Nightreign, a solo multiplayer spinoff, later this month.
