The Google Translate app for iOS has been updated with a new function. Following the upgrade, it may be made the default app for all translation requests on compatible iPhone and iPad models. Apple originally added the option to change default applications for music playing, navigation, and translation to the iPhone with the iOS 18.4 release. Previously, the company's own Translate software was the sole choice for establishing a default translation app; now, Google Translate is now available as an alternative.
Default Translation App for iPhone
The app page for Google Translate on the iOS App Store indicates that it may be configured as the default translation app for iPhone and iPad models running iOS 18.4 or later software, respectively. To obtain access to this capability, users must upgrade the program to the newest version 9.8.011.
To set it up:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Select Apps > Default Apps and press Translation.
- Choose Google Translate from the available options.
Gadgets 360 team can confirm that after upgrading the app, Google Translate displays as an option in the default applications area.
Google Translate allows users to translate bilingual conversations in up to 249 languages. It allows for both text translation across languages and dictation of spoken words or phrases. According to Google, it may be utilized without an internet connection by downloading language packs. The program also allows you to draw text characters instead of typing, transcribe in real time, store translated words and phrases for later reference, and translate text in photos or through the camera viewfinder.
Notably, with the iOS 18.2 release in November 2024, Apple included a new unified area to the iOS Settings app. It enables users to set the default app to be used when a link is clicked or a certain feature is utilized. Users may now set a default app for email, messaging, calling, call filtering, browser, translation, passwords and codes, and keyboards on their iPhone.
