King Charles has officially begun his first journey to North America since taking the throne, landing in Canada amid ongoing difficulties with his son, Prince Harry.
The 76-year-old king, joined by Queen Camilla, arrived in Ottawa on May 26 for a quick visit lasting less than a day.
Despite having weekly cancer treatments, the King remained upbeat as he resumed overseas responsibilities, marking a watershed point in his reign.
This is King Charles' twentieth official visit to Canada, and Queen Camilla's sixth.
But, although Charles arrived on the same continent as Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex was noticeably absent, making a surprise appearance in Shanghai, China, for a global travel and tourism conference.
Harry resides in Montecito, California, with his wife Meghan Markle and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Only weeks ago, the Duke made headlines after losing a judicial battle over his reduced U.K. security, triggering an interview with the BBC.
"I'd love to reconcile with my family," Harry said.
"There's no point in continuing to fight anymore." In a rare emotional statement, he mentioned King Charles' cancer diagnosis, saying, "Life is precious."
I'm not sure how much longer my father has... He won't communicate with me because of security concerns, although it would be good to reconcile."
Prince Harry has maintained that his father, as head of state, has the authority to reinstall the security protection that he lost after stepping down from royal responsibilities.
