Mark Hamill hasn't visited the galaxy far, far away in almost five decades.
During an appearance on the 3rd Hour of Today on Friday, June 6, the 73-year-old actor admitted that he hasn't seen Star Wars: A New Hope since its 1977 release.
"I haven't seen it since it came out," said Hamill. "My sons watch it, and Nathan is a major fan. I watched it when it first came out, and I don't go back to it."
He isn't sentimental about his own work, either. "I'm not one of those people that goes, 'Hey, let's watch one of my movies!'" he giggled.
While the franchise is frequently referred to as sci-fi, Hamill has always viewed it differently.
"One of the things that struck me when I first read [the screenplay] was, 'This isn't science fiction — it's a fairytale,'" said the director. "There's a princess, there's a wizard, there's a space pirate."
He even compared it to The Wizard of Oz, saying it would be like "if you did a gender switch and made Dorothy Luke."
Hamill also reflected on filming Return of the Jedi, recalling how he pushed George Lucas for further character development. "I told Luke that he had lost his hand. Shouldn't it be about him dealing with his darker side? And George said, 'Mark, it's for children.'"
