Brad Pitt is explaining why the Ford v Ferrari film version he planned with Tom Cruise never made it to the big screen.
Pitt spoke with The National while promoting his new racing picture F1, and revealed what caused the early version of the film to stall, despite having Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski on board.
"For a while, Tom and I were working on Ford v Ferrari, with Joe directing. "This was about ten years before the guys who actually made it - and made it a great movie," Pitt explained.
"What it came down to was that we both wanted to drive, and Tom wanted to play Shelby, while I wanted to be Ken Miles. And when Tom discovered Carroll Shelby wouldn't be driving much in the film, he didn't follow through.
So I'm not sure how that'll work [in a possible F1 sequel], but we'll give it a shot. "I would love to."
The version that did get filmed, directed by James Mangold and starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon, was a critical and commercial success.
"I would want to drive again, selfishly speaking," Pitt stated of a possible F1 sequel.
"F1 remains the priority. It should focus on Joshua Pierce, Damson Idris' character, and the rest of the squad as they compete for the title. Where does Sonny fit in? I am not sure.
Sonny is probably off on the Bonneville Salt Flats smashing speed records or something. So I'm not sure beyond that right now."
Director Joseph Kosinski has hinted at even grander ideas for a hypothetical sequel, suggesting that Cruise may join the cast, perhaps mixing Pitt's F1 with Cruise's legendary NASCAR picture Days of Thunder.
For the time being, Pitt says he's just enjoying the response to Formula One and how it's bringing people together.
"Right now, I'm ecstatic that something like this can bring people together. That's the force of this type of film," he explained.
F1 is presently showing in theaters around the country.
