Hwang Dong-hyuk, the developer of Squid Game, intends to provide a more harsh final season.
The 53-year-old South Korean film director, producer, and writer spoke with Entertainment Weekly about what viewers may anticipate in the Korean survival drama's next final season.
Hwang commented: "In the case of season 3, I wanted to introduce games that could really show the lowest bottom of human beings, because the series itself is reaching its climax."
He went on: "I wanted very intense games to bring out the bottom parts of human nature."
The Fortress director even compiled a list of games he played as a youngster, which he referred to throughout the series.
"In season 1, we had lots of games like Tug of War that really utilized height and the fear that this height gives, but in the case of season 2, we didn't have that element," Hwang said with a smile.
"That is why in season 3, I decided to introduce games that could really instill fear in people with sheer height," he revealed the rationale for going over the top with merciless and terrifying games in the last season.
Expanding on this, the Silenced director stated, "For season 1, I attempted to stress on how fierce rivalry exists in this hyper capitalistic environment. In the instance of season 2, I intended to demonstrate how Gi-hun violates the game's rules by attempting to instigate a revolt to upend the system, which ultimately fails."
"And for season 3, I wanted to take a somewhat different approach, focusing on how [people] must maintain their humanity in the face of severe rivalry in this capitalistic period. I wanted to focus on how we might maintain our humanity in the face of tremendous competition. "I try to pose that as a final question," Hwang Dong-hyuk explained.
For those unfamiliar, the second series ended on a cliffhanger, with Gi-hun attempting to confront the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) but losing his companion, Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan). Now, in the upcoming final season, he will be feeling the loss of his friend more than before.
It is worth noting that the third and final season of the popular Netflix program Squid Game will be published on June 27, 2025.
