Chad Stahelski, the director of John Wick, recently said that putting Keanu Reeves in the planned spinoff Ballerina was not part of the original idea.
Reeves, 60, who received international praise for his portrayal of John Wick in the action-thriller trilogy, will make a cameo appearance as "Baba Yaga" in the fifth sequel to the 2014 original.
In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stahelski stated, "That was not in the original script." To be honest, I was against it. But I can see the value, and we wanted to aid [director Len Wiseman]."
Later in the discussion, the 56-year-old filmmaker discussed the energy produced by the success of Chapter 4.
Speaking with the site, he said, "We had just launched John Wick 4, and it was massive. He couldn't go back to the model of the original John Wick and try to build it up with a small $18 million independent project. In order to stay in the game, you must give him a fighting chance. And the easiest way to carry it across - at least from the studio's perspective - was to have Wick in Ballerina in a different chronology."
The film From the World of John Wick: Ballerina will be released in theaters on Friday, June 6.
For those unfamiliar, fans of the franchise are overjoyed to see Reeves reprise his legendary role in the impending spin-off.
