Google Workspace users now have access to Gems within the applications, the firm revealed on Wednesday. Gems are personalized artificial intelligence (AI) specialists who can be taught to complete specific jobs. They've been accessible in the Gemini app and website since August 2024, but the Mountain View-based tech company is finally bringing them to Workspace apps like Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drive, and Gmail. Gems will be accessible through the Gemini side panel on these platforms.
Gemini Gems are coming to Google Workspace Apps
In a blog post, the tech titan announced the inclusion of Gems in Google Workspace apps. Notably, the capability is only available to paying individual and business Workspace account customers who have already accessed the Gemini side panel.
Gems may be thought of as a tiny version of the Gemini chatbot, in which users can enter instructions once to have it execute specified activities. Users do not have to repeat the same instructions, which saves time. Gems can also be provided data, such as text, files, or photos, to modify their replies and increase accuracy.
Users will receive a few pre-made Gems from the new side panel offering, which they can immediately utilize to complete tasks. Some of them are the Writing Editor, which offers constructive comments on written content; the Brainstormer, which provides inspiration and ideas for specific tasks; and the Sales pitch ideator, which may develop interesting proposals for customers, among others.
In addition to the pre-made Gems, users may make their own by selecting the "Create a new Gem" button at the top of the side panel in the Gems menu. According to Google, users may access the creation menu and choose the role and instructions to create a new gem. These may be designed to write and analyze code, produce blogs, offer pertinent summaries, and much more.
Because the capability is connected with the Workspace apps, users may take the output and feed it right into the app they're working on. Once a Gem is produced, it will display in all Workspace applications.
