Google has unveiled the Pixel 6a Battery Performance Programme. As part of this campaign, all Pixel 6a customers will be required to update to Android 16. While the tech giant has already launched the latest version of the Android operating system (OS) for its phones ranging from the Pixel 6 to the Pixel 9 series, the Pixel 6a is not eligible for the upgrade. However, this is changing, with the necessary Android 16 upgrade for the device releasing this month.
Android 16 Update for Pixel 6a
Google said on its support page that Android 16 will be available as a necessary automatic software upgrade for the Pixel 6a beginning July 8. It will be available for "Impacted Device" devices. This is being done to reduce the risk of battery overheating, which might endanger device owners.
According to the tech giant, the update will enable important battery management capabilities for the Pixel 6a. Following the Android 16 rollout, Google will limit the phone's battery capacity and charging performance once it has reached 400 charge cycles.
However, the business stated that until the battery exceeds this threshold, battery-related modifications and new features would be dormant.
Pixel 6a customers whose devices have been labeled as affected will get a reminder notification when they reach 375 charge cycles. Along with reduced battery capacity, customers may experience slower charging speeds. Furthermore, the battery-level indication may vary, although this is expected to be a temporary alteration while the phone adjusts to its revised capacity.
If the Pixel 6a qualifies for the Battery Performance Program, owners are entitled for free repairs. If customers do not choose to pursue repairs, they can choose a cash reimbursement or a store hardware discount that will be used to their next Google Store purchase.
This adjustment comes after many reports of Pixel 6a battery difficulties earlier this year. In February, a Pixel 6a owner posted many photographs of their cellphone on social media, showing the phone's battery enlarged and pushing the screen out of frame. Then, in May, another Pixel 6a reportedly burst owing to a bulging battery.
