NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) announced on Monday a cooperation with Netflix to live broadcast rocket launches, spacewalks, mission coverage, and views from the International Space Station (ISS). Following this change, the video streaming giant will include live feeds from the NASA+ service in its interface, in addition to its current catalog of films and series. According to reports, Netflix customers will be able to view live coverage of NASA activities in high definition.
NASA+ Feeds on Netflix
According to NASA, the live streaming service will be accessible on Netflix "this summer". Viewers will be able to see rocket launches, mission footage, and real-time views of Earth from the ISS in HD definition. It is an addition to the video-streaming platform's current catalog of films and series, but there is no additional cost beyond the existing membership.
Netflix said the NASA+ service would be included in all of its subscriptions, from the Rs. 149 per month Mobile Plan in India to the top-tier Netflix Premium Plan, which costs Rs. 649 monthly.
"Together, we're committed to a Golden Age of Innovation and Exploration — inspiring new generations — right from the comfort of their couch or in the palm of their hand via their phone," said Rebecca Sirmons, General Manager of NASA+, in a statement.
The addition of NASA+ to Netflix is claimed to be part of the space agency's overall attempts to broaden its reach. NASA hopes that by partnering with Netflix, it would be able to expand its engagement, particularly with the current audience. In the future, it will also communicate with people via video, audio, social media, and live events.
The space agency stated that precise schedules for the live streaming would be made available closer to the service's start.
Meanwhile, individuals who want to watch rocket launches and live views from space without a Netflix subscription may do so for free. The NASA+ service is also accessible via the NASA app and the space agency's website, with no ads.
