At the WSJ Magazine Innovator Awards, Billie Eilish received recognition for her powerful statement that went viral on social media.
The 23-year-old said that she will donate $11.5 million from the proceeds of her tour in addition to accepting the Music Innovator Award.
The Birds of a Feather singer encouraged those who are wealthier than she to make the most of their money during her acceptance speech, stating, "I'd say, if you have money, it would be great to use it for good things, maybe give it to some people that need it."
"I love you all," Eilish went on, "but there are some individuals here who are far wealthier than I am. What makes you a billionaire, if you are? Mark Zuckerberg, Priscilla Chan, Hailey Bieber, George Lucas, Tory Burch, and Karlie Kloss were among the attendees. "I don't mean to offend, but yeah, give your money away, shorties," he said.
Despite Taylor Swift's absence, a few of social media users contended that the Grammy winner also singled out the pop sensation, with one commenting on X, "I believe she's disparaging Taylor."
"In the meantime, what has Taylor donated?" someone inquired.
"The way Rihanna is the unethical billionaire but people are busy hating on Taylor and Selena Gomez," a third person said. A subsequent tweet clarified that this was aimed at all billionaires. At Taylor Swift, Elon Musk, and all those in between.
"So she is donating to the 'Climate Crisis' globalist griff," several comments said, criticizing her action and casting doubt on its motivation. She is either complicit or simply really stupid," and "I know what you are, Billie, making donations and then declaring them."
“A nice big tax write-off,” said another judge.
One X user said, "she did a good thing and she's still getting hate for it be for real," in response to the critical remarks.
