Clint Eastwood does not intend to slow down anytime soon. At 95, the great actor and filmmaker stated unequivocally that he has no plans to retire from the camera as long as he is still discovering new things.
Eastwood spoke with Austrian daily Kurier in an interview published on Friday, May 30, about his journey and what motivates him.
"As an actor, I was still under contract with a studio, was in the old system, and thus forced to learn something new every year," he explained, according to a Reuters translation.
"And that's why I'll work as long as I can still learn something, or until I'm truly senile."
Eastwood has never lost his edge as he has aged.
"There is no reason why a guy can't improve with age. And I have considerably more experience now. Sure, some filmmakers lose their touch with age, but I'm not one of them."
He also discussed contemporary Hollywood tendencies, particularly the emphasis on remakes and major franchise films.
"We live in an era of remakes and franchises," he told me. "I've done three sequels, but I haven't been interested in them for a long time. My philosophy is, "Do something new or stay at home."
Looking back on the film industry's early days, Eastwood stated, "I wish for the good old days when screenwriters created films like Casablanca in little bungalows on the studio lot. "When everybody had a new idea."
Even as he continues to work on his art, Eastwood is struggling with personal tragedy.
Cristina Sandera, his lifelong partner, died in July 2024. The pair had been together for almost 10 years, having met at Eastwood's Mission Ranch Hotel and Restaurant in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.
"Christina was a lovely, caring woman, and I will miss her very much," Eastwood told The Hollywood Reporter at the time.
