Following the terrible deaths of player Diogo Jota and his brother in a vehicle incident in Spain earlier today, Prince William paid a poignant tribute.
The Prince of Wales, as patron of the Football Association, took to social media to express his sadness at the awful news. In a personalized greeting signed with his initial, he wrote:
"As a member of the football family, I am very grieved to learn of the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother.
Our sympathies are with his family, friends, and everyone who knew him. @LFC @Wolves: W"
The "W" at the end of the post indicates that Prince William wrote the message himself, rather than a member of his staff, and that it was published on his and Princess Kate's joint social media account.
Jota, a renowned character at Liverpool FC and former Wolves player, was only 28 years old.
He was driving through the province of Zamora when the accident happened just after midnight.
According to Spain's Guardia Civil, the Lamborghini drove off the road in the town of Cernadilla after a sudden tire burst while passing.
In a statement to the BBC, the Guardia Civil said, "The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tire blowout while overtaking."
It happened around 00:30 BST in the municipality of Cernadilla, province of Zamora."
The terrible news has sent shockwaves across the worldwide football community, with condolences coming in from fans, teammates, and sports luminaries alike.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher and Portuguese sensation Cristiano Ronaldo have also sent heartfelt tributes to the late footballer.
