As King Charles prepares to wave farewell to the royal family's iconic train, a personal reminiscence of the Duchess of Sussex has surfaced, highlighting a rare and sweet moment of royal bonding.
Meghan Markle joined the late Queen Elizabeth II for her first solo royal engagement aboard the Royal Train prior to their journey to Cheshire in 2018, just weeks after marrying Prince Harry.
It was a major rite of passage, as only a few royals had ever been invited to accompany the monarch on the nine-car locomotive.
Prince Harry recounted the incident in his biography Spare, which was published in January 2023, describing Meghan's nervousness before the trip as well as how well it proceeded.
"Days later Meg went off on her first royal trip with Granny," the prince wrote.
"She was anxious, but they got along great. They also connected over their love of pets."
Meghan returned after her journey glowing, telling Harry, "We bonded." "The Queen and I really bonded!"
She even revealed a piece of advice from the Queen: "We discussed how badly I wanted to be a mother, and she informed me that the greatest way to induce labor was a nice bumpy car trip! I promised her that I'd remember it when the time came.
The cherished nine-car locomotive, once a symbol of regal elegance and seclusion on the move, will be retired before its maintenance contract expires in early 2027.

The statement was made in this year's annual royal accounts, which were issued on Monday, and it marks a departure in how the royals travel.
Moving forward, the family will rely more on two new helicopters for official transportation, abandoning the slower but legendary beauty of rail travel.
