Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been mocked by royal fans for not being invited to Oprah Winfrey's 69th birthday party.
Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Priyanka Chopra, and other celebrities attended the celebration, which Meghan was conspicuously absent from.
A PR expert says the Duchess of Sussex may have turned down the offer over fear of "more public ridicule".
According to Mario Almonte, president of Herman & Almonte Public Relations, widespread claims of a snub may be false.
"Prince Harry and Meghan's absence from Oprah's recent birthday celebration may reveal more about the couple's present mental health than Oprah's assessment of them or the royals."
He quoted Amonte as saying: "To be honest, the majority of those who attended Oprah's party were celebrities, largely recognised as performers and entertainers. The event was also for 'the 25 most powerful women,' therefore Harry's appearance would have been inappropriate " None of the attendees were completely 'public officials,' as Harry and Meghan are.
"However, even if those circumstances are ignored, the pair - or, at least, Meghan - may have chosen not to go out of concern for their public image."
The pair is presently facing controversy following the publication of Prince Harry's book Spare, which contains a number of serious charges about the royal family.
